My name is Pak Pete. I am originally from England and have spent the last 10 years travelling and teaching in international schools all over the world. I have been fortunate to teach in Europe, South America and Asia. For the last 10 years, I have travelled with my wife and 3 young children. It has always been important for my wife and I to travel and develop our understanding and appreciation for the world we live in and raise our children with a wide worldview and to provide them with rich and diverse life experiences.
In 2021, I completed my MSc in sustainable and environmental education and this deeper dive into education and environmental studies, alongside my teaching experience, led to me develop a very holistic and experiential view of education. Over the course of my teaching career, I began to view traditional forms of education, curriculum and pedagogy as insufficient and not bestplaced to equip children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the present and inthe future. These traditional forms of education seemed focused on knowledge retention, testing and learning in theory not in context. For this reason, I decided to move to Bali and to work at Wood School.
I am extremely pleased, grateful and proud that my children are able to attend Wood School, where students receive a holistic, joy-filled form of education, grounded in compassion and with a neohumanist approach to life as well as teaching and learning. I passionately believe that the best form of learning should be experiential, outdoor led and grounded in real-life contexts- taking the learning not just beyond the classroom but rooted in outdoor experiences. I passionately believe that teachers should be facilitators and supporters of learning, allowing children to have greater autonomy and direction over their learning, whilst being supported in a safe and nurturing environment.
Through our exploratory, project-based learning approach, Woodschool and the Middle-Years program, allows children be drivers of their own learning and explore curiosity, in real-world, outdoor based contexts whilst working towards a tangible and meaningful outcome.
