Middle Years Program (Grades 5-6)
The Middle Years at Wood School provide a dynamic and engaging transition between the foundational learning of the Primary Years and the deep, project-based explorations of the Upper Years. Designed for students aged 11-13 (Grade 5 and 6), our program blends core academic skills with hands-on, inquiry-driven learning, all rooted in our Neo-Humanist philosophy of universal love, sustainability, and holistic development.
A Unique Learning Experience
In these years, students build on their neo humanist foundations while expanding their ability to think critically, collaborate, and engage in meaningful projects in school and our wider community. They begin to take greater ownership of their learning, exploring real-world connections and developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
Key Features of Our Middle Years Program
Project-Based Learning: Students engage in interdisciplinary projects that blend science, math, language arts, and social studies with creativity, problem-solving, purpose and hands-on applications.
Global and Local Awareness: Through thematic studies of cultures, ecosystems, and social issues, students connect with both their immediate environment and the broader world.
Community Engagement and Service: Inspired by the values of seva (selfless service) and gotong royong (mutual cooperation), students take part in projects that benefit both the school and the wider community.
Personal and Spiritual Growth: Daily reflection, mindfulness, and moral philosophy discussions, guided by Yama and Niyama, help students develop emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and ethical decision-making.
Environmental Stewardship: Middle Years students take an active role in our sustainability initiatives, from maintaining the school garden to designing eco-friendly solutions for the campus.
Creative Expression and Exploration: Through performing arts, music, storytelling, and hands-on craftsmanship, students are encouraged to express themselves and develop their unique voices.
Building Independence and Resilience: As they transition toward the Upper Years, students gain confidence in their ability to research, plan, and present their learning, preparing them for future academic and personal challenges.
